map of Africa we see today?
They combined rival ethnic groups and separated friendly groups. They colonized loads of groups to create countries, this caused conflict, and they ignored ethnic boundaries.
unprepared to run countries
Growing money crops, so the land became up farmable
Native ethnic conflicts left them week
Ethnic tension (favored groups)
How did colonialism lead to modern
conflicts and problems?
The Europeans favored groups like the Idgo cause they switched to Christianity and spoke English
Created resentment between favored and non favored
Non favored did not get enough supplies
Non favored did not like western education and English because of it
Caused groups like Boko Haram
Boko Haram = western education is forbidden
The three major ethnic groups

- Western ~Yoruba biggest group,Different kingdoms have different dialects (Yoruda),Some are Muslim and many are Christian
- Eastern ~ Houses build with mud bricks, houses on stilts, wear masks
Economy of the three regions
North ~ Farming, Herding, Trading
East ~ Oil, Doctors, Lawyers, Teacher, Jobs there require edu, Embrace western edu
West ~ People used to live in villages but moved to cities
Work ~ farms, doctors, engineer, officers, factory workers
Commute from city to work on small farms
Women sell goods, treats, cloth baskets, makeup
How did colonialism lead to conflict
The Igdo have easy access to oil which gives them money for schools and since the British favored them they are not against western edu so they go to school and make more money than other regions. Other regions like northern Nigeria have jobs that do not require education, they had resentment for western education so they don’t have jobs like the eastern Nigerians. Western however does have some jobs requiring education so I am guessing they weren’t as favored as eastern Nigerians but still didn’t have as much resentment for western edu
What motivated European powers to colonize African countries
