More powers to Holyrood :
Scottish gov given the authority to borrow £5 billion,
Powers over drugs, driving and guns
Scottish Independence referendum 2014
84.5% turnout
55% leave, 45% stay. Put an end to devolution worries but then Brexit happened which they didn’t agree on
Scotland act 2016
More reserved powers to Scotland over a wide range:
Abortion laws, Speed limits, Air passenger duty. Scottish par and executive now permanent in the UK constitution - can only be abolished by referendum
SC judgement on Scottish independence referendum 2022
SC rejected Sturgeon’s calls for a second independence referendum because they had one already
Gender Recognition Reform Bill prevented form proceeding to Royal Assent 2023
2023 - Secretary of state for Scotland vetoed the gender recognition reform bill, stopping it from getting royal assent.
Angering Scottish Par, they saw it as an attack in their devolved legislative powers
Positive impacts of devolution
S, first part in the UK to ban smoking in public spaces, in 2006,
Free uni education for Scottish residents,
Voting age reduced to 16 for local elections, referendums and elections to Scottish Par,
Since 2011 medical prescriptions have been free,
2014 - 55 % voted ‘NO’ to independence,
Significant powers - able to introduce a range of popular bills/acts
Negatives/issues left unresolved
Power-sharing agreement broke down with the SNP and the Greens,
Blocked from 2nd independent referendum,
Scottish Gender Bill vetoes by secretary of state for Scotland
