Scoliosis + Scheuermanns Flashcards
what is the criteria for Adults idiopathic scoliosis
> 10 degrees of 3D spinal deviation in ppl 10 or older
what is the mc form of scoliosis and how many have an identifiable cause
majority idiopathic
20% have identifiable cause
prevelence of AIS >10 degrees
1-5%
for curves between 10-20 what is the M:F
equal
for curves over 30 what is the M:F ratio
girls 7x more common (and have a higher risk of curve progression)
tx for >20,30-50,50+
> 20 tx indicated
30-50- bracing
50- surgical (almost certain to progress in adults)
what are some risk factors of progression
- positive family hx
- laxity of skin/jts
- puberty
- flatening of kyphosis
- female
mc etiological theory for scoliosis
Inhertience/genetic (30-40%)
what are the proposed pain mechanisms of AIS
muscular (eccentric load on convex side)
asymetrical facet loading
disc degen
central sensitization
What did the US preventive services task force find on school screening
screening can detect AIS + bracing or exercise can slow progression
goals of tx
- reduce spinal pain
- adress or prevent respiratory dysfunction
- decrease rate of progression
- improve aesthetics
can exercise tx be effective
for ex tx to be effective, it requires intensive + consistent ex regimes
what is the recomended time frame for bracing
20hr/day recomended
incidence of scheurermans kyphosis
.4-8%
eitology of scheuremans is likely a combo of
- Genetics
- Biomechanics
- hormonal abnormalities
