Scoence Test Flashcards
What is a solid? Give an example
-molecules are closely packed together
-don’t flow or change shape
-stay in one place unless pushed or pulled
-cannot be easily compressed
Ex: metal, plastics
What is a liquid? Give an example
-molecules are free to move about
-can change their shape and flow
-can take the shape of a container
-doesn’t change volumes
-cannot be easily compressed
Ex: juice or water
What is a gas? Give an example
-atoms bonded to one another
-can change their shape and volume
-can spread out in all different directions
-can cause explosions or major fire when compressed
Ex: oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen
What is Brownian motion? Give an example
Small particles bumping into larger particles (random movement).
Ex: when you put grains of pollen in water. The pollen grains (large particles) bump into the water particles ( small particles) which is random movement.
What is diffusion? Give an example
When particles of 1 substance spread out and mix with the particles of another substance.
Ex: tea, when you put a tea bag in hot water the tea particles spread out in the water and mix with the water particles.
What is suspension?
A mixture of 2 substances that separate if the mixture is not stirred regularly.
What is a colloid?
When one substance disappears in another substance, and the 2 substances will not separate easily.
What is a solution?
A mixture where the solid dissolves in the liquid. The mixture is then clear or transparent
What is a solute?
The substance that is put into liquid in a solution
What is a Solvent?
The liquid that is used in a solution
What is an Evaporation?
When the liquid in a solution turns into a gas which then escapes into the air
What is Chromatography?
It separates substances that are dissolved in a mixture
What is distillation?
It removes most of the salts from water. This requires expensive equipment and lots of space
What is a water treatment plant?
A factory that makes sure the water has low levels of chemical disinfectant when the water leaves the treatment plants plant
