Sclera
The white layer of the eye that covers most of the outside of the eyeball.
Function of sclera
The sclera functions as the supporting wall of the eyeball. Ithelps maintain your eyeball’s shape, and protects it from injury
What is episcleritis
Episcleritis is inflammation of the superficial,episcleral layerof the eye.

How does it present?
Typical symptoms :
.generalized or local redness of the eyes
.mild soreness or discomfort
.typically less painful
.no vision loss
.Bright red eye
.Vessels blanch with phenylephrine drops and can be moved by a cotton swab
How does scleritis present?
.significant pain
.deep red eye
.pain with eye movement
.vision loss
.vessels that do not blanch with phenylephrine
What is scleritis?
Scleritis is theinflammation in the scleral tissues with injection of deep episcleral vessels
What causes scleritis?
Scleritis is most often linked toautoimmune diseases. Eg;
.Rheumatoid arthritis
.systemic lupus erythematosus
How does scleritis present?
.pain🤕
.tenderness of the eye😖
.redness eye is bluish red 🥵
.swelling of the white part of the eye😳
.tearing🥲
.extreme sensitivity to light😶🌫️
Treatment of non infectious scleritis?
.Always requires systemic therapy :
.nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
.glucocorticoids
.other immunosuppressive drug
🚨Steroid injection is contraindicated
