Scince 2 Flashcards
Wave
a disturbance that transfers engery from one place to another
Medium
A substance through which a wave moves
Mechinal
A wave such as a sound or seismic wave that transfers kenitic engery through matter
Transverse
A wave in which the disturbance moves at an angel to the direction of the wave
Longitudinal
A type of wave in which the disturbance move in that the wave travels
Crest
The highest point or peak of a wave
Thought
The lowest point or valley of a wave
Amplitude
The maximum distance that a disturbance causes a medium to move from its rest point
Wave lengthier
The distance from one crest to the next wave crest
Frequency
The number of waves that pass a fixed point in a given pierod of time
reflection
The bouncing back of a wave after it hits a barrier
Refraction
The bending of light as it crosses a boundary between two mediums at an angel other than 90 degrees.
Diffraction
The spending out of a waves as they pass through an opening or around the edges of an obstacle
Electromagnetic
A type of wave such as a light wave or radio waves that does not require a medium to travel through a disturbance that transfers engery through a field
Radiation
Engery that travels across distance in the from of electromagnetic waves
Electromagnetic wave
Definition of electromagnetic wave. : one of the waves that are propagated by simultaneous periodic variations of electric and magnetic field intensity and that include radio waves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays.
Radio waves
The part of the electromagnetic spectrum that consists of waves of the lowest frequencies
Micro waves
Part of the electromagnetic spectrum that consist of waves with a higher frequencies than radio waves but lower frequencies than infrared waves
Infrared light
Part of the electromagnetic spectrum that consists of waves with a frequencies between those of microwaves and visible light
Ultraviolet light
The part of the electromagnetic spectrum that consists of wave of frequencies higher than those of visible light and lower than x-rays
X-rays
The part of the electromagnetic spectrum that consists of waves with high frequency and high energies electromagnetic wave with frequencies ranging from 10 to the 16 powers to the 10 to the 21 hertzs
Gamma rays
Part pf the electromagnetic spectrum that consists of waves with the hights frequencies
Transmission
The passage of waves thought a medium
Absorption
The disappearance of a wave into a medium the engery transferred by a wave is converted into another form of engery
Scattering
The spreading out of light waves in all direction as partacils reflect and absorb the light
Polarization
A way of filtering light so that all of the waves vibrate in the same direction
Prism
An optical tool that uses refraction of light separation the different wave lenght that make up white light
Primary colorsany
There colors of light (red yellow and blue) that can be mixed to produce all possible colors
Primary pigment
There color of substance ( cyan yellow and magenta) that can be mixed to produce any possible colors
Interference
The meeting and combining of waves: the adding or subtracting of wave amputated that occur as waves overlap
Electromagnetic Spectrum
The range of all frequencies
