scince Flashcards
(26 cards)
matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space. (Earth, air, fire, water, etc…)
atoms
Small particle – building block of matter
info
Neutrons are neutral and they live in the nucleus
2. Protons (+) live in nucleus & Electrons (-) orbit around the nucleus
3. They determine the properties of the matter they compose
4. A million times smaller than the diameter of a human hair
substances
Matter with a composition that is always the same
elements
A substance that consists of just one type of atom (aluminum, hydrogen, oxygen)
compounds
A type of substance containing atoms of two or more different elements chemically bonded together (CO2 , H2O)
mixtures
Matter that can vary in composition
info about mixtures
Heterogeneous Mixture would be like a salad
2. Homogeneous Mixture would be like orange juice
3. Solvent: The majority of the mixture (water usually)
4. Solute: The other substances in a solution (sugar, orange pulp, etc…)
Compounds
Two or more types of atoms bonded together
2.properties are different from the properties of the elements that make it up
3. Each compound has a chemical formula
4. Water is a compound
Solutions
Are evenly mixed, and two samples from a solution will have the same amount of each substance
Example salt water
Also a solution is also called homogeneous mixture
Properties:
the arrangement of atoms also determines the properties of different types of matter.
Physical properties
is a characteristic of matter that you can observe or measure without changing the identity of the matter
States of matter:
Solid, liquid, gas (SLG)
Those 3 are states of matter
Substances and mixtures can be SLG
Aluminum =
element / solid
Water =
compound / liquid
Air =
mixture / gas
more info to know
Some physical properties, such as mass and volume, depend on the size or amount of matter.
Mass:
is the amount of matter in an object
info about mass
Mass is the amount of matter in something
But weight is the pull of gravity on the matter ( make sure you know the difference)
The larger dumbbells have greater mass than the smaller ones because they contain more matter
Volume:
it is a physical property that depends on the size or the amount of a substance is volume. Also is the amount of space something takes up
Size independent Properties:
Size independent properties are melting point, boiling point, density, electric conductivity, and solubility
When a solid changes to a liquid that is the melting point.
From a liquid to the gas that is the boiling point
Doesn’t matter how much water is in the container it matters how hot it is
Density:
is the mass per unit volume of a substance. Also Melting point and boiling point, density is a size-independent property.
Conductivity:
Another property that is independent
Electrical conductivity is the ability of matter to conduct, or carry along, an electric current
Solubility:
is the ability of one substance to dissolve in another
