Scientific Skills Flashcards
What is the purpose of experiments?
It can provide proof of a theory
What is the purpose of scientific investigations?
It is used to determine a relationship between different variables and to confirm or reject a hypothesis
What does the report consist of?
Aim
Investigative question
What is the aim?
A summary of the goal or purpose of the research
A short statement explaining the experiment is attempting to achieve
What is the aim of investigative question?
it determines what is tested in the experiment
What must a investigate question include?
Independent and dependent variable
Ask a question about the relationship between variables
End in a ?
The answer must not be yes or no
Change the aim into a question
What is a hypothesis?
A testable statement about the relationship between two variables
What guidelines must you follow when formulating a hypothesis?
Indicate what you expect the outcome to be
Must include both variables and indicate the relationship between them
Use word like increase, decrease, etc. to indicate that one variable gets more/less, the other variable gets more/less
If… Then…
What is apparatus?
Materials required to do the investigation
What is method?
A list of steps followed in the investigation
What is results?
A record of your observations
What is Validity?
Was the test fair
Did it test what it set out to test
What is Reliability?
If repeated, would the results be the same
What should the Conclusion do?
Answer the scientific question
State the effect the independent variable had on the dependent variable
Contain both variables
Indicate if the hypothesis can be accepted or rejected
