Scientific Practices Flashcards
Falsifiable
Something that can be proven to be false
Foliage
The leaves of a plant or tree
Theory
An explanation for some aspect of the natural world that is based on facts that stood up to repeated testing by the scientific method over a period of time
Variable
Any factor or condition that be changed in an experiment
Qualitative data
Data that we observe with our senses e.g colour change
Quantitative data
Data that involve measurement and will always be numerical values
Mean
The sum of all the values in a set of data divided by the total number of values
Correlation coefficient
A statistical measure that describes the size and direction of a relationship between two or more variables the correlation coefficient is denoted by the letter r
Analysis
Identification of trends and patterns in data examining or scrutinising results
Objective
A way of looking at something that is not influenced by personal feelings or opinions
Subjective
A way of looking at something that is based on personal feelings ,tastes or opinions
Interpretation
The process of explaining the meaning of your data and drawing conclusions or findings
οΏΌcausation
Indicates that a change in one variable is the direct result of a change in another variable
Randomised controlled experimentοΏΌ
An experiment in which the subjects are randomly divided into two groups . The experimental group receives the treatment under investigation while the control group receives no treatment
Control
The control is the commonly or the normal or usual state
Statistical uncertainty
Random fluctuations in measurement
Systematic uncertainty
Constant repeatable error usually caused by measuring instruments that are in correctly calibrated
Bias
A preconceived opinion about something
Zoo Nautic diseases
Diseases that can be passed from animals to humans
Pathogen
I disease-causing organisms such as bacteria and fungus or virus
Gametes
Sex cellsοΏΌ
