The Subject of Sociology
human interactions, social groups, social structure, social systems and society
The three theories (Paradigms) in sociology
Functionalism (Emile Durkheim); Conflict theory (Karl Marx); Symbolic interactionism (George Herbert Mead, W.I. Thomas, and others)
Scientific Methodology
Same systematic process in all science, if this systematic process is not conducted then the outcome is not considered as science
Social Imagination
View the world from a point of view that is separated from one’s self, that is larger than one’s self, and that only includes one’s viewpoint as among the many
Ecocentrism
The view of one’s self as the center of the universe, self-centered
Ethnocentrism
The view of one’s perspective is the right view, a view that applies to all others, one’s view is all there is to the universe, social perception-centered
Global perspective or world view
To see the world as interrelated with unique and differing perspectives, to see individual societies from their own unique point of view, culturally relative
Diversity
The differences that come with an open society, acceptance of differing points of view, social conditions and circumstances, Diversity
Advantages of sociological perspective
Helps assess the truth of common sense; helps assess both opportunities and constrains in our lives; Empower us to be active participants in our society; helps use actively live in a diversity world
Positivism(social group)
Laws of society - human society is governed by laws that are observable and replicable
Idealism(social group)
Personal observations and inferences of human behavior agree with social values
Structural functionalism
All social circumstances have a structure and all structures have a function
Social conflict theory
All social circumstances are in constant change, all change creates strain, hence conflict
Symbolic interationism
All social circumstances are defined by a set of shared symbols, symbols are used to create shared meaning between and among social groups
