Scientific Method Flashcards
Scientific Method
A series of steps to solve a problem
Controlled experiment
An experiment that changes only one variable
Variable
Any factor that can exist in differing amounts or types.
Data
The information and results gathered from an experiment
Hypothesis
An educated guess, a scientific prediction, a possible solution to a problem
Control
Parts of the experiment that stay the same (control variables, control factors, or constants.)
Experimental group
The group that tests the changed factor, they experience the new treatment.
Control group
The group that remains the same, unchanged, does not experience the new treatment. used for comparison
Independent Variable
Factor being intentionally changed, “I” change
(experimental variable or manipulated variable) THE DIFFERENCE
Dependent variable
Factor that occurs as a result of the change, the part of the experiment that is recorded (responding variable) *Results or measurements
Quantitative Observation
A description of an observation using numbers and measurements. *numerical
Qualitative observation
A description of an observation using words only. *description
Theory
A rule about why things happen in a given situation (an explanation). *can only change when the evidence changes.
law
A rule about what will happen in a given situation
Mnemonic: Sally Grabbed Four Pickled Cans And Fainted
1) State the problem
2) Gather information (Research)
3) Form a hypothesis
4) Perform an experiment
5) Collect and record data
6) Analyze data
7) Form a conclusion.
