Scientific method Flashcards
What do I want to know?
Question
What do I know? (What can I find out from others as well?)
Knowledge probe
What do I think might happen? (Use information gathered from the knowledge probe.)
Prediction
What steps do I use to test my prediction? (Is my investigation fair? Is my investigation repeatable?)
Investigation Plan
What is my data? (What data was collected by my 5 senses? What data was collected through measurement?)
Observation
How does my data provide evidence to support my prediction? (What data is important? Are there patterns? Is it organized?)
Data Analysis
What did I learn? (State my claim and support it with evidence and reasoning.)
Explanation
How well did I do?
Evaluation
How do I use what I have learned?
Application
How do I organize my thinking?
Journal
During observation, what is used to collect data?
Our 5 senses (touch, taste, smell, feel, and see)
Tools (thermometer, timer, ruler, and triple beam balance.)
What is a independent variable?
The variable that the scientist changes, there should only be one in an experiment or you will not know what caused a change in the independent variable.
What is the difference between fact and opinion?
FACT: Something everyone can agree upon as true.
OPINION: not based on information that everyone can agree upon as true. Based on personal beliefs
Name 3 types of graphs and explain how each one is used to show specific information.
BAR GRAPH: shows comparison between 2 or more things
CIRCLE GRAPH: shows comparison between a part and a whole. (Uses percentages)
LINE GRAPH: shows comparison of something to itself over time.
What are the important things a graph needs in order to be correct?
TAILS: Title X and Y axis Intervals (numbers) Labels Appropriate scales
