Scientific Method Flashcards
Criteria
Limited to only what is observable
Must be testable in a repeatable way
Unbiased
The scientific method
Observation Hypothesis Testing/data collection Analysis and review Draw conclusions
Observe
Observe the corn with miracle grow fertilizer grows taller then the corn without miracle grow
Develop hypothesis
Corn grows taller in soil with miracle grow
Null hypothesis
Corn will not grow taller in soil with miracle grow
Hypothesis verses Theory
Hypothesis- a tentative explanation of some regularity of nature
Theory- a hypothesis that has been tested numerous times and remains consistent
Broader scope
Predictive power
Testing/collecting data
In nature or lab Try and verify your hypothesis Some options 1 systematic observations 2 modeling 3 experiments - how could we test our corn hypothesis?
Three types of variables
Independent
Dependent
Standard
Independent variable
Changed/manipulated by investigator
Dependent variable
Measured on the manipulation conducted on the independent variable
Standardized variable
Held constant
Control group
A standard of comparison for the experimental group
Analyze and report results
Did or didn’t the corn with miracle grow have an effect in how large it grew compared to the corn with no miracle grow
What is science
Systematic study of nature
