Scientific Method Flashcards
Steps of the scientific method
- Identify research patterns
- Formulate a hypothesis
- Design the method
- Collect data
- Analyse the data
- Interpret results
- Report findings
What’s in an aim
Variables being studied conditions manipulated and results that can be measured/ observed
Independent variable
Cause variable and the variable that’s manipulated
Dependant variable
The effect variable , measurable variable
Extraneous variable
Might or can have an effect on the dv
Confounding variable
Have had an effect on the dv
Hypothesis
Includes the population being tested, both levels of the IV, specific prediction, the DV/ what is being measured
Population
Larger group a sample is drawn from
Sample
Smaller group in the large group chosen to be studied
Random sampling
Ensures each member of the targeted population has an equal of being chosen to be apart of the sample
Stratified sampling
Divide the population into subgroups then randomly select participants from each subgroup in proportion to how they appear in the population
Random allocation
To assign participants to the control group or the experimental group
Experimental groups
Group exposed to the experiment/the IV there can be more than 1 experimental group
Control group
Compared the performance to the control group
Between subject design
Allocated to either experimental/controlled group comparing data to another group
