Scientific Method (034) Flashcards
Scientific Method
A series of steps to solve a problem
1. State the problem
2. Gather information
3. Form a hypothesis
4. Perform an experiment
5. Collect and recod data
6. Analize data
7. Form a conclusion
(Sally Grabbed Four Pickled Cans And Fainted)
Controlled experiment
An experiment that chnges only one variable
Variable
Any factor that can exist in differing amounts or types
Data
The information and results gathered from an experiment
Hypothesis
An educated guess, a scientific guess, a possible solution to a problem
Experimental group
The group that tests the changed factor, they experience the new treatment
Control group
The group the remains the same, unchanged, does not experience the new treatment
~Used for comparison~
Control(s)
Parts of the expierament that stays the same ~Control variables, control factors, or constants~
Independant variable
Factor being intentionally changed, “I” change
~Experimental variable or manipulated variable~
THE DIFFERENCE
Dependant Variable
Factor that occurs as a result of a change, the part of the experiment that is recorded
~Responding variable~
Results or measurments
Prediction
A guess of what will happen in the future
Observation
Information that one gathers using their senses
~Sight, smell, touch, taste, hearing~
Fact
Inference
Conclusions that you draw based on yor background knowlage and evidence you’ve collected
Opinion
Quantitative observation
A description of an observation using numbers and measurments
Numerical
Qualitative observation
A description of an observation using words only
