1
Q

2
Q

what is the hypothetico-deductive model?

A

cycle from theory, to hypothesis, to observation, to interpretation and back to theory

Q

what is the difference between induction and deduction?

Q

describe deduction

A

start with a theory, develop hypothesis, test out our hypotheses, and observe what’s going on.

Q

what word can’t be used to describe a theory/hypothesis?

6
Q

describe induction

A

We observe something and on the basis of the observation ask if there is a pattern, once we see a pattern, we have a tentative hypothesis. And then we develop some theory and we may well test out that theory by testing the hypothesis and then seeing if it works.

7
Q

what characteristics do hypotheses have?

A

falsifiable, predictions, give direction to researchers to answer a research question, outline and anticipate a relationship between two or more variables, derived from theory, clearly stated and testable

8
Q

what does it mean for a hypothesis to be falsifiable?

A

the hypothesis needs to be on that can be proven wrong or disconfirmed through observation or experimentation.

9
Q

what happens if a hypothesis is not falsifiable?

A

if you can’t state a falsifiable hypothesis then you don’t have a true scientific theory

12
Q

what does it mean for a hypothesis to be false?

A

test results contradict the prediction of the hypothesis - doesn’t mean the whole theory is wrong, but helps refine our understanding

16
Q

what are the paradigms of research?

A

positivist, interpretive and constructionist

17
Q

which paradigm does quantitative research fall into majority of the time?

A

logical positivist perspective (largely deductive)

18
Q

describe the positivist paradigm

A

assume there is a stable external reality and that our job is to find laws of nature - objective

19
Q

what method do quantitative researchers use?

A

experimental

20
Q

what is the ontology of the positivist paradigm?

A

stable external reality, law-like

21
Q

what is the epistemology of the positivist paradigm?

A

objective, detached observer

22
Q

what is the methodology of the positivist paradigm?

A

experimental, quantitative, hypothesis testing
