Scientific Investigation Flashcards
Where is science limited to?
It can be carried out in many fields.
Name 2 important principals of science.
A collective endeavor, we build on past knowledge and progress with cooperation.
Self correcting - mistakes or fraud are easily found and corrected.
What makes a good hypothesis?
It has 1 dependent variable
An attempt at disproving can be tried
It can be tested
Name the 6 steps of the scientific method
- Ask a question / make observation
- Do background research
- Construct a hypothesis (prediction a or not prediction a)
- Test / investigate / experiment
- Analyze data and draw conclusions (prediction a or not a) (display, statistical analysis)
- Communicate results and adapt
Independent variable
The thing that is changed in order to test something.
Controlled variables
The things that are kept constant and not changed by the scientist, to make the experiment fair.
Control (group)
Where the variable under consideration is kept under natural conditions so that a comparison can be obtained from the results.
Dependent variable
The outcome expected from the experiment which is reliant on hoe the independent changes.
Aim
A statement that describes the prupose or reaosn for doing an experiment. It usually begins with an action (to investigate/ to determine) and ends in a relation between the indipendent and dependant variables. (Influence of x on y/ effect of x on y)
Idea
A thought or suggestion as to a possible course of action.
Hypothesis
Propositions set forth as an explanation for the occurrence of a a phenomena, either just as a provisional conjecture to guide experimentation or accepted as highly probably with established facts.
Theory
A coherent group if propositions formulated to explain a group of facts or phenomena int he natural world and repeatedly confirmed through experimentation or observation. Widely accepted but not yet a law.
Law/ fact
A phenomenon that has been proven to occur whenever certain conditions are met or exist. Its a formal statement about such a phenomenon.
Name the 9 parts of the scientific report
Idea, aim, hypothesis, materials and method, results, conclusion, discussion, acknowledgements, references/bibliography
What is discrete data?
Can count it
Can only take on a specific value
Data is put in categories
Cant have decimals
