Scientific Investabation Skills Flashcards
What are the characteristics of a scientific question?
A question that is answerable by the scientific method/ cycle of proof
Give an example:
If wolves are re-introduced to an area, will the population of deer increase, decrease or remain the same.
Give a non- example:
Should we introduce wolves to an area?
Define each of the following terms and give and example for each:
Next card
Observation
Statements of things detected using our senses.
Example: the liquid was transparent
Inference
A conclusion drawn from observations
Example: the liquid was a solution.
Qualitative observation
A descriptive observation obtained using the senses
Example: the solution was blue
Quantitative observation
A numerical observation obtain by measurement
Example: the volume of the solution was 15mL
How is a scientific theory different from a scientific law?
Scientific law describes what happens and scientific theory explains why it happens
Give an example of each:
Theory:
Law:
Theory: atom theory
Law: law of conservation of mass
List 3 safety rules to follow when using a Bunsen burner.
Safety goggles
Tie back long hair
All accidents must be reported to the teacher immediately
Explain how to light a Bunsen burner.
To light a Bunsen burner •open the gas valve • close the air supply •turn on the gas at the tap • light the burner (with a flint lighter)
Explain how to obtain a hot flame.
To obtain a hot flame, rotate the barrel to open the air supply
How do you know when u have a hot flame?
When you see the inner blue core
Where is the hottest part of the flame?
The hottest part of the flame is the tip of the inner blue core
