Scientific Inquiry Flashcards
The belief that something is true; a good experiment keeps these to a minimum.
Assumption
The group of test subjects that do not get the independent variable; they are used for comparison.
Control Group
The data that is collected in an experiment.
Dependent variable
The group of test subjects that the scientists run the experiment on because they receive the independent variable
Experimental Group
An instrument or tool that is used to accurately measure the volume of liquids.
Graduated Cylinder
An educated guess that predicts the outcome of an experiment.
Hypothesis
The factor that the scientist changes in the experimental group to find out its effect.
Independent variable
A conclusion or deduction based on observations
Inference
A measure of the quantity of matter in an object.
Mass
A curved surface on the top of a liquid in a container.
Meniscus
A unit of length equal to one-millionth of a meter.
Micrometer
Any information that is collected with any of the senses.
Observation
The process by which scientists carefully examine the work of other scientists to look for possible flaws in their experimental design or their interpretation of results.
Peer Review
An explanation, supported by many observations and/or experiments that can be used to explain related occurrences.
Theory
An experiment is said to have this when it is repeatable and produces the same results.
