scientific endeavour Flashcards
what is the independent variable
the changed variable
what is the dependent variable
the measured variable
what does the collar do
to control the amount of aire able to enter the burner by opening or closing air holes
what is the base for
it is to support the bunsen burner so that it does not topple
what are the characteristics of a non-luminous flame
it is blue, stable, and powerful, it is used to heat things up
what are the characteristics of a luminous flame
it is not stable, it is red. it is for visible caution to warn people that the bunsen burner is on
what are some precautions to take when heating things up
wear safety goggles whenever there is an open flame. do not aim the mouth of the test tube at anyone.
once the water starts to boil, move the test tube away from the flame, to avoid spurting of the water
do not wash test tube immediately
when does a strike back occur
whent he gas tap is on but the air hole is not closed.
what will you observe when there is a strike back
there will be a strange noise and you will see a flame inside the air hole. there will be a thin blue/green/yellow flame.
what are some appropriate apparatuses to use when measuring the volume of a liquid and what are their measurements
the measuring cylinder[0.0/0.5] the burette [0.00/0.05] the pipette [0.0]
what are different methods to collect a gas and which type of gas is it for
the water displacement method used for insoluble or slightly soluble gases. the downward delivery method, for gases denser than air. the upward delivery method, for gases less dense than air.
