Sciens Dichomentis Flashcards
Prokaryotic
a microscopic single-celled organism that has neither a distinct nucleus with a membrane nor other specialized organelles. Prokaryotes include the bacteria and cyanobacteria.
Eukaryotic
An organism whose cells contain a nucleus surrounded by a membrane and whose DNA is bound together by proteins (histones) into chromosomes.
Unicellular
consisting of a single cell.
Multicellular
(of an organism or part) having or consisting of many cells.
Autotrophic
an organism that is able to form nutritional organic substances from simple inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide.
Heterotroph
A heterotroph is an organism that cannot produce its own food
sexual reproduction
the production of new living organisms by combining genetic information from two individuals of different types
Asexual reproduction
Asexual reproduction is a type of reproduction by which offspring arise from a single organism, and inherit the genes
Stimuli
a thing or event that evokes a specific functional reaction in an organ or tissue.
Homeostasis
the tendency toward a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by physiological processes.
Evolution
the process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and diversified from earlier forms during the history of the earth.
Classification
the arrangement of animals and plants in taxonomic groups according to their observed similarities (including at least kingdom and phylum in animals, division in plants, and class, order, family, genus, and species).
Taxonomy
the branch of science concerned with classification, especially of organisms; systematics.
Cell
the smallest structural and functional unit of an organism, typically microscopic and consisting of cytoplasm and a nucleus enclosed in a membrane. Microscopic organisms typically consist of a single cell, which is either eukaryotic or prokaryotic.
Tissue
any of the distinct types of material of which animals or plants are made, consisting of specialized cells and their products
