Q

An atom is the smallest unit of matter that retains all of the chemical properties of an element.

For example, a gold coin is simply a very large number of gold atoms molded into the shape of a coin.

Individual atoms, from two to thousands, combine to form molecules, which can be made up
of the same type or different types of atom.

Q

A molecule consists of two or more atoms of the same element, or different elements, that are chemically bound together.

Some molecules can connect to each other.

In some molecules, the same atoms of different elements repeat; in other molecules, the same atom of a single element repeats.

Q

Elements consist of only one kind of atom.

Elements can exist as either atoms (e.g. argon) or molecules (e.g., nitrogen).

Compounds consist of atoms of two or more different elements bound together.

Compounds have properties that are different from its component elements, and always contain the same ratio of its component atoms.

Q

Mixtures consist of two or more different elements and/or compounds physically intermingled.

Mixtures can be separated into its components by physical means, and often retains many of the properties of its components.
