SCIENCE WORDS Flashcards
Independent variable
Variable you choose to change in an investigation
Dependent Variable
The variable that you measure
Resolution
The smallest change in quantity that can be measured by a measuring instructions. I.e. mm on a ruler
True value
The values that would be obtained in ideal conditions
Uncertainty
The range within which the true value can be expected. I.E. The temperature is 20 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees
Measurement error
The difference between the true value and measured value
Systematic error
Caused by a mistake or error in the apparatus, the results will all differ from the true value by the same amount. Systematic errors cannot be fixed by repeats.
Random Error
Occurs when results vary unpredictably between readings. Caused by a human error when reading. Effects reduced by repeat testing.
Accuracy
A measurement is accurate if it is close to the true value.
Precision
Precise if all repeats are close to the mean.
Repeatability
The precision obtained when an experiment is performed repeatedly by a single group.
Repeatable
If a single group using the same method and equipment obtain similar results
Reproducibility
How close the precision is when the same experiment is done with different groups
Reproducible
If different groups obtained similar results.
