Science Wind Vocabulary Flashcards
Wind
The horizontal movement of air from a region of high pressure air to a region of low pressure
Weather Vane
A revolving pointer to show the direction of the wind, typically mounted on the top of a building
Anemometer
An instrument used to measure wind speed
Wind Turbine
A device that converts kinetic (moving) energy in wind into electrical energy
Windchill Factor
A measure of cooling combining temperature and wind speed
Local Winds
Winds that blow over short distances
Sea Breeze
The flow of cooler air from over a large body of water to land
Land Breeze
The flow of air from land to a large body of water
Global Winds
Winds that blow steadily from specific directions over long distances
Coriolis Effect
The effect of earth’s rotation on the direction of winds and currents
Jet Stream
Band of high speed winds about 10 km above earth’s surface
