Science waves Flashcards
Study
What is a wave?
A wave is a disturbance that carries energy from one place to another. A wave disrupts the particles by moving them back and forth or up and down
What is a mechanical wave?
Waves in which matter moves back and forth in repeating patterns. In a mechanical wave, the disturbance is the motion of the particles of matter.
What is a Longitudinal wave
A wave that travels in the same direction as the vibration or the disturbance that produce it.
What is a transverse wave?
Travels perpindicular to the waves disturbance/cause
Wavelength
A wavelength is the distance from one crest to another
What is the length from one compression to another?
The wavelength
What is a waves compression
When the coils are close together on a slinky (compressed together)
What is a rarefaction?
When the coils are being pulled apart/ they are spread out.
What is the distance between 2 crests?
Wavelength
What is the highest point of a wave?
The crest
What is the middle of a crest and trough?
The equilibrium/ resting position
What is the distance between the crest or trough to the resting position?
The aplitude
The bottom/ lowest point of a wave is..?
The trough
Define amplitude
The distance between the highest crest and the equilibrium
What is a wave showing high amplitude?
A very high wave
