Science WA (ENDOCRINE SYSTEM) Flashcards
Exam flashcards will be coming out soon
1
Q
What is the Latin meaning of Endocrine?
A
Endo = “inside”
Krine = “secrete”
2
Q
What are the functions of the Endocrine System?
A
- Metabolism and tissue maturation
- Ion Regulation
- Water balance
- Immune system regulation
- Heart rate + blood pressure regulation
3
Q
What are the major organs of the Endocrine System?
A
- Glands
- Hypothalamus
- Pancreas
- Ovary/Testis
4
Q
What are Hormones?
A
- Chemical substances (from cells to extracellular fluids)
- Some don’t affect hormone receptors because they are not recognized
5
Q
What do Hormones regulate?
A
- biology processes (muscle growth, hunger, heart rate, menstrual cycles)
- metabolism
- growth and development
- tissue
- sexual functions and reproduction
- sleep
- mood
6
Q
What are Hormone Receptors?
A
- selective
- it only chooses hormones it recognizes
7
Q
What is the Hypothalamus?
A
- located in the brain (Major endocrine glab)
- connects the nervous system to the endocrine system
- commands pituitary gland to work or stop
- produces hormones and Oxytocin (love hormone)
8
Q
What is the Pituitary Gland?
A
- near the hypothalamus
- commands other glands (from the brain)
- Oxytocin, ADH (Posterior)
- Proteins, Glycoprotein, Peptide
9
Q
What is the Pineal Gland?
A
- produces Melatonin (sleep hormone)
- has light/dark cycles
- biological rhythms/Biorhythms
- more melatonin = better sleep
10
Q
What is the Thyroid Gland?
A
- maintains Metabolism
- Calcitonin, T3, T4
- TSH = Calcium in the blood
- when underactive, Hypothyroidism occurs
- when overactive, Hyperthyroidism occurs
11
Q
What is the Parathyroid Gland?
A
- Behind the thyroid gland
- produces Parathyroid hormones (PTH) or peptide
- WhenHigh PTH = high calcium levels in blood
- Whentoo high PTH = excreted (calcium must be in the bones)
12
Q
What is an Adrenal Gland?
A
- Present in Amines, steroids
- Adrenaline = epinephrine
-
Horadrenaline = norepinephrine
Symptoms of Adrenaline rush:- wide eyes
- muscle contractions
- sweating
- faster heartbeat
- imblanaced blood vessels
- deeper breathing
13
Q
What are the Ovaries?
A
- Present in Females only
- Estrogen, prgestins
- Uterine lining sheds every month (menstruation)
14
Q
What are the Testes?
A
- Present in Males only
- Androgens; testosterone
- Responsible for sperm formation
15
Q
What is the Pancreas?
A
- Near the adrenal gland
- Insulin and glucagon
- Feedback center of the endocrine system
- Glycogen breakdown to Glycogen formation
- Glucose turns into Glycogen
- Insulin = stimulates glycogen formation
