Q

“Hard law of life, which lies at the root of religion”- Jekyll

A

“Hard law”- all humans are sinful.
This quote means that Jekyll is trying to do a favour by separating the good and evil personalities so no one can live in secrecy.

Q

What tension does both of these themes give?

A

Before science reviled that the earth was created by the Big Bang, most people believed that God created everything and everyone. Many Victorians thought this view was dangerous because it suggested that science had the power to create life. This is why Jekyll kept it a secret.

Q

Why was Hyde created?

A

Jekyll was so troubled by his sins, when he was younger he “regarded and hid them…… Sense of shame”- he was shamed by what people would think of him if he told anyone and he didn’t want to cross paths with God as that is how people thought Jekyll was one of the most religious people.
