Science vocab test practice Flashcards
The basic unit from which all matter is made
Atom
a change in which one or more substances combine or break apart to form new substances
chemical change
a characteristic of a substance that describes its ability to change into different substances
chemical property
a substance made of two or more elements that are chemically combined in a set ratio
compound
a measure of the mass of a material in a given volume
density
a pure substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical means
element
the amount of matter in an object
mass
anything that has mass and takes up space
Matter
two or more substances that are together in the same place, but their atoms are not chemically bonded
Mixture
a group of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds
molecule
a change that alters the form or appearance of matter but does not turn any substance in the matter into a different substance
physical change
a characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed without changing the matter into another substance
physical property
a single kind of matter that always has a specific makeup, or composition
substance
a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in an object or substance; a measure of how hot or cold something is
temperature
the total energy of motion of all of the particles in an object. Thermal energy flows from warm matter to cooler matter.
