Science Vocab- Compounds Flashcards
Ion
one of the electrically charged particles formed in a gas by electric discharge or the like.
Atom
the smallest component of an element having the chemical properties of the element, consisting of a nucleus containing combinations of neutrons and protons and one or more electrons bound to the nucleus by electrical attraction;
Element
Chemistry.one of a class of substances that cannot be separated into simpler substances by chemical means.
Covalent bond
the bond formed by the sharing of a pair of electrons by two atoms. Two non metallic elements
Ionic bond
Bonding of one metallic and one non metallic element
Hydrogen bond
a type of chemical bond in which a hydrogen atom that has a covalent link with one of the electronegative atoms (F, N, O) forms an electrostatic link with another electronegative atom in the same or another molecule.
Molecule
Chemistry, Physics.the smallest physical unit of an element or compound, consisting of one or more like atoms in an element and two or more different atoms in a compound.
Carbon
Chemistry.a widely distributed element that forms organic compounds in combination with hydrogen, oxygen, etc., and that occurs in a pure state as diamond and graphite, and in an impure state as charcoal.
