Science unit 8 Flashcards
Weathering
The breaking down of rocks on Earth surface into smaller pieces
Erosion
The process of moving sediment from one place to another
Deposition
The dropping or settling of eroded materials
Sediment
Sand, bits, or settling of eroded materials
Delta
Landform created by the long-term depostion of sediment
Landform
A natural land shape or feature
Sand dune
a mound or ridge of sand or other loose sediment formed by wind
Causes of Weathering
Gravity, Flowing water, rain, floods, waves, tree roots, chemicals in rain (pollution), sand blowing, animals digging, and ice wedging
crust
the thin outer layer of Earth, including dry land and the ocean floor
mantle
the think layer of earth beneath the crust
core
the layer of earth extending from earth’s center to the bottom of the mantle. Its mostly metallic iron and nickel
Plate tectonics
the theory that Earth’s crust is divided into plates that are always moving
fault
a break in earth’s crust where rock on one side moves in redation to rock on the side
earthquake
a shaking of Earth’s surface that can cause land to rise and fall
epicenter
the point on earth’s sorface directly above the focus of an earthquake
