Science Unit 4 quiz 1 Flashcards
Weather conditions
refer to the atmospheric conditions that compose the state of the atmosphere:
Temperature
Wind
Clouds
Precipitation
Weather events
are combinations and interactions of weather conditions that occur at a specific place and time.
Examples: tornadoes, hurricanes, and other storms.
Wind
Moving Air
Temperature
A measure of the thermal energy of matter.
Thermal Energy
is the total energy of motion in the molecules of a substances.
Precipitation
The movement of evaporated water, moisture in the air (water vapor)
What Matter are we talking about when we refer to temperature when we talk about the weather?
air
What is necessary to make these conditions occur?
Energy
What are the three main cloud types?
Cumulus, Stratus, Cirrus
Cumulus Clouds
Big, white, and puffy clouds that are spread across the blue sky
Fair and Dry weather
Stratus Clouds
Flat, hazy clouds that are low above the Earth’s surface.
Dark gray to white
Brings a light rain or snow (if cold)
Typically found on a cloudy day (hides the sun)
Fog
Stratus clouds that are on the ground or very near the ground.
Cirrus Clouds
High, see-through, wispy clouds
If there are only a few in the sky → weather will NOT change
If there are a lot → weather will change tomorrow or the next day
**Stormy weather is on the way
Thunderhead Clouds
Fluffy top
Flat base/bottom
Thunderheads
Special kind of light, puffy cumulus clouds
When cumulus clouds get larger they become a special cloud called: cumulonimbus
Size and dark color indicate a strong storm very soon
Severe storms
High winds, lots of rain, and probably lightning
