Science - Types of Eruptions Flashcards
-The most explosive and powerful of all eruptions
-Considered to be the most
explosive eruptions,
producing ash columns that
extend many tens of miles
into the stratosphere and
that spread out into an
umbrella shape.
Plinian Eruption
Driven by the direct
interaction of magma and
water.
Phreatomagmatic Eruption
-A Steam- Blast eruptions as a hot rock comes in contact with water.
-Made up of steam-driven explosions that occur when water beneath the ground or on the surface is heated by volcanic activity. The water, once heated, begins to boil or can even flash straight to steam, causing an explosion.
Phreatic Eruption
-Bursting of gas bubbles within the magma
-basaltic magma with moderate gas content
Strombolian Eruption
Pressure of entrapped gases in relatively viscous magma becomes sufficient to blow off the overlying crust of solidified lava.
Vulcanian Eruption
Volcano eruptions which take place beneath the surface of water. These occur at constructive margins, subduction zones and within tectonic plates due to hotspots. This eruption style is far more prevalent than subaerial activity.
Submarine Eruption
