Science Topic 5-7 Flashcards
Carbon Cycle
Carbon comes out of factories, goes into the air, is absorbed by producers, animals eat the plants, they die and get decomposed, then the carbon comes back into the air.
Evaporation
When a liquid changes into water vapor.
Transpiration
When water evaporates from leaves on plants and trees
Condensation
Which water vapor condenses and is able to hold less and less water
Precipitation
When hail, sleet, snow or rain comes down into the environment from the clouds
Groundwater
Water that is in the soil and plant/tree roots can each that water
Run-off
Water that runs off the ground into lakes, rivers or streams
Water Cycle
Starts with evaporation, then condensation, and precipitation.
Pollution
Things that make the environment unhealthy and/or dirty
Pollutants
Substances that cause pollution
Acid Rain
Rainwater that has been made to acidic by some types of air pollution
pH
the measure of how acidic or basic a substance is
Bioaccumulation
The build up of something inside an organism
Succession
a community changes over time causing a natural change to the environment
Primary Succession
when a new patch of land is created or exposed for the first time
Secondary Succession
when a ecosystem slowly renews itself after its habitats have been damaged
Biological Control
the control of a pest by the introduction of a natural predator
Extinct Species
The dying or disappearance of a species from Earth
Endangered Species
Any type of plant or animal that is in danger of disappearing forever
Introduced Species
Those that have been moved by humans to an environment where they didn’t occur naturally.
Ecosystem Monitoring
A way to check the condition of an ecosystem
Indicator Species
An organism that helps scientists figure out the health of the environment
