Science Test - Space Flashcards
How many days does it take for the moon to orbit the Earth?
About 30 days
How many phases of the moon are there?
8 phases
What causes different portions of the moon to be visible at different times in a month?
Both the Earth and the Moon are constantly moving and changing positions. The relative positions of the Earth, Moon, and Sun will affect how much the moon is visible to us from Earth.
How many artificial satellites are currently orbiting the Earth?
Over 1000
What are the purposes of artificial satellites?
They are used for navigation, weather, communication, Earth observation, and Space observation.
What is the International Space Station?
The International Space Station is a massive structure ( about the size of a football field ) that ca house astronauts for extended periods of time. The purpose is to provide research for the astronauts to study and research about the unknown parts of space.
What is the Hubble Space Telescope?
The Hubble Space Telescope is a massive space telescope that was launched into space by the American Space Agency. Its main purpose is to take pictures of the many different objects in space.
What creates the seasons that we expected?
The tilted axis and movement of the Earth around the Sun creates the seasons that we experience throughout the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere.
When it is winter in the Northern Hemisphere, explain the position of Earth relative to the Sun.
When it is winter in the Northern Hemisphere the Earth’s Northern half is tilted away from the sun. Since the rays of the Sun have a longer distance to travel we experience colder temperatures.
When it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere, explain the position of Earth relative to the Sun.
When it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere the Earth’s Northern half is tilted away from the sun. Since the rays of the Sun have a shorter distance to travel we experience warmer temperatures.
Why do countries that are closer to the Equator experience less dramatic climate changes throughout the year?
Countries that are closer to the Equator experience less dramatic climate changes throughout the year because they are closer to the center point of the Earth ( the belly ). That means that as the Earth moves around the sun, countries and cities near the equator continue to get direct rays from the Sun. The extreme points of the Earth ( North & South Poles ) will experience greater climate changes because they are at either end of the Earth’s tilted axis, therefore will be farther away from the Sun at certain points in the yearly rotation. Also, due to the fact that the Earth is a spherical shape, the most Northern and Southern parts of the Earth will be naturally farther away from the sun at all times.
Which countries seem to be the most involved in space exploration?
USA & Soviet Union ( Russia )
Who was the first man to walk on the moon?
Neil Armstrong - USA
Who was the first woman to have ever flown in space? What country was she representing?
Valentina Tereshkova - Soviet Union ( Russia )
What was Chris Hadfield most known for?
He lived in space for 5 month period in the IIS. He was the first Canadian Astronaut to float in space. He communicated frequently on social media about his experiences in space.
