Science Test Sept 17 /24 Flashcards
What is potential energy
Stored energy due to the interaction between objects or particles
What is energy?
The ability to cause change
What is chemical potential energy?
The energy contains in chemical bonds and transformed during a chemical reaction
What is nuclear energy?
The energy in and released from the nucleus of an atom
What is kinetic energy?
Energy due to motion
What is electric energy?
The energy in an electric current
What is mechanical energy?
The sum of the potential energy and the kinetic energy in a system
What is thermal energy?
The sum of the kinetic energy and the potential energy of the particles that make up an object
What is a wave?
A disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another without transferring matter
Is Sound energy carried by waves true or false
Yes, sound energy is carried by waves
What type of light is visible?
Visible light
Which one has a higher wavelength, gamma rays or radio waves
Gamma rays have a higher wavelength
What is the law of conservation of energy?
Energy can be transformed from one form to another, but it cannot be created or destroyed
What is an energy transfer?
When energy moves from one object to another without changing form
What is an energy transformation?
When one form of energy is converted to another form of energy
What is work?
The transfer of energy that occurs when I force makes an object move in the direction of the force
What is an open system?
A system that exchanges matter or energy with the environment
What is a closed system?
A system that does not exchange matter or energy with the environment
Is a closed system a real thing
No, a close system is not a real thing every physical system transfers some energy to or from its environment
What is renewable energy?
An energy resource that is replaced as fast as or faster than it is used
What is a nonrenewable energy resource?
An energy resource that is available in limited amounts or that is used faster than it can be replaced in nature
What are some renewable energy resources?
Biomass, geothermal, hydroelectric, solar, and wind.
What are some nonrenewable energy resources?
Oil, petroleum, natural gas, other gases, and nuclear energy.
What is heat?
The movement of thermal energy from a region of higher temperature to a region of lower temperature(hot to cold, hot to cold)
What is temperature?
Represents the average kinetic energy of the particles that make up a material
What is conduction?
The transfer of thermal energy due to collisions between particles in matter
What is convection?
The transfer of thermal energy by the movement of particles from one part of a material to another
Which material moves, thermal energy, slowly, a thermal insulator, or a thermal conductor
A thermal insulator moves, thermal energy more slowly
What is radiation?
The transfer of thermal energy from one object to another by electromagnetic waves
What is thermal expansion?
The increase in the volume of a material when it’s temperature increases is known as thermal expansion
What is thermal contraction?
The decrease in the volume of a material when it’s temperature decreases
How does a thermometer work?
A thermometer has a red liquid inside, and the wet liquid is put in cold water. It decreases and when it’s put in hot water, it increases.
What are the three temperature scales?
Kelvin , Fahrenheit , and Celsius
What is the difference between melting and freezing?
When something is melting the material changes from a solid to a liquid, but when it is freezing, it changes from a liquid to a solid
What is vaporization and what are the two ways that it occurs?
Vaporization is the change in state from a liquid to a gas. The two ways that vaporization occurs are boiling and evaporation.
What is condensation?
The change of state from a liquid to a gas
What is sublimation?
The change of state that occurs when a solid changes to a gas without passing through the liquid state
What is deposition?
The change of state for a gas directly to a solid without passing through the liquid state
