Science Test Review Flashcards
Binary Fission
One cell simply divides into two ex. Amoeba, bacteria
Fragmentation
a small piece, or fragment, breaks away from main mass and grows a new individual ex. Sponges, starfish
Budding
Copy of nucleus is made, small bud forms on cell wall containing new nucleus, grows until breaking away, becoming independent cell ex. Jellyfish, yeast
Spore
Reproductive cell that can grow into new individual through mitotic cell division ex. Algae, fungi
Bulbs (plants)
Underground food storage organs with fleshy leaves that store food and can grow and develop new plants ex. onion, tulip
Tubers (plants)
Tiny scale leaves equipped with buds that grow on its surface. Each bud can form new plant identical to the parent. ex. yams, potatoes
Rhizomes (plants)
nodes of zhizomes (underground stem that grow on soil surface) send out roots into soil to perform asexual reproduction by vegatative propogation. ex. bamboos, lotus
Runners (plants)
Meristematic cells (undifferentiated cells) in the stem can divide to produce cells that will become a new plant. ex. strawberries, peppermint
Grafting (plants)
stems from plants can be attached or grafted to the rooted stock of related/similar plants. ex. rose, mango
Tissue culture
allows identical plants to be grown quickly by taking specialized cells from one plant and growing them in a special solution ex. Banana, eggplant
Complete Metamorphosis
the process by which an organism develops into an adult by changing from one form to another ex. tadpole to frog
Incomplete Metamorphosis
when organisms develop into an adult through a series of stages having slightly different forms ex. nymph to grasshopper
Hermaphrodite
animals that have both male and female reproductive organs in each individual ex. snails, slugs, sea stars, earthworms
Gymnosperms
any vascular plant that reproduces by means of an exposed seed or ovule. Usually formed in unisexual cones. Dont have flowers or fruits and have naked seeds of surface of leaves ex. pine, conifers
Angiosperm
Plant that produces flowers and bear their seeds in fruits. ex. grasses, dandelion
