science test home work revision Flashcards
How is the periodic table arranged.
In order of increasing atomic number!
What are the vertical columns in the periodic table called?
They are called groups!
Where are the transition metals found in the periodic table?
They are found in the middle section of the periodic table.
Are there more non-metals or more metals in the periodic table?
In the periodic table they’re more metals!
Is hydrogen and metal or a non-metal in the periodic table?
Hydrogen is a non-metal
What a the horizontal columns in the periodic table called?
They are called periods!
What do most metals have in common?
Most metals are 1)shiny, especially when they are freshly cut 2)good conductors of heat and electricity 3)malleable (they can be bent and shaped without breaking)
What is the only metal that is liquid at room temperature?
Mercury is the only metal that is a liquid at room temperature!
What are the three elements that are magnetic?
The three metals that are magnetic are iron, cobalt and nickel!
Is steel magnetic?
Yes but it is a mixture of elements (that is mostly steel.)
What happens when a metal reacts with oxygen?
It creates a metal-oxide!
What are the properties of non-metals?
The properties of non-metals include: dull (not shiny) poor conductors of heat and electricity (they are insulators) weak and brittle (they easily break or shatter when solid) Most non-metals also have these properties:
How many non-metals are gases at room temperature?
They’re is 11 non-metals that are gases at room temperature!
What is the only non-metal that is a liquid at room temperature?
Bromine is the only non metal liquid at room temperature!
What can pure carbon exist as?
As diamonds or Graphite, but there is a difference between them, diamonds are hard while graphite is soft. diamonds are colourless, but graphite is black!
What non-metal can conduct electricity?
Graphite
What is the most reactive metal?
Potassium
What is the least reactive metal?
Platinum
Why is copper used to make water pipes?
As it unreactive
What is Biological weathering?
It is when roots of a tree grow into the cracks of a rock and make the crack bigger!
What is Chemical Weathering?
Weathering coursed by chemicals. When rains such as acid rain, rains upon rocks or stones and melts them or make then were away.
What is physical weathering?
Physical weathering is coursed by physical process such as wind, changes in temperature freeze thawing and the sea.
What are the three main rock types?
igneous (for example, basalt and granite) sedimentary (for example, limestone, sandstone and shale) metamorphic (for example, slate and marble)
Explain the rock/lime cycle?
1) all rocks start of as magma 2) magma gets pushed to the top of a volcano and moves towards the sea. 3) after erosion and weathering the rocks get pushed down into the bottom of the sea and it gradually builds up. 4) Movements in the earth courses the rocks to move down and back toward the volcano. (creating Metaphoric rock) 5) When the rock reaches the bottom of the volcano it heats back up and melts back into lave.
