Science Test 2 Flashcards
Three ways volcanos destroy
1 blow the top off the mountains
2 give off harmful gases
3 lava can burn everything
What is the difference between lava and magma?
The difference is lava is molten rock and reaches the earth’s surface and magma is molten rock that is deep within the earth’s crust
What are mountains cause by?
They are created when the earth’s tectonic plates crash together
What do glaciers cause?
Great Lakes
What is a fault?
The cracks in the rocks that make up the earth’s crust
Three different types Strike slip fault Normal fault push away Thrust fault push together
What is the epicenter?
Right above where an earth quake happens
Where do earth quakes usually happen?
The boundaries of two plates or edges
Three ways volcanos build
1 build mountains
2 can form islands
3 lava can form new land
What is the ring of fire
Where most volcanic activity is around the Pacific ocean
What is a conduit
The passage which the magna flows in a volcano
What is a vent
An opening within the earth’s surface where volcanic materials erupt
What is a volcano
It is a vent within the earth’s surface where lava, ash and gas escape
The crust moves along cracks called
Faults
The movement along a fault is called
An earthquake
The movement usually happens along the edge of the plates called the
Bounderys edges
What is an earth quake
An earth quake happens when plates or rocks within the earth suddenly break or shift under stress
Fold mountain
Rocks are crumbled up along the edge between the plates
two of the earths plates are pushed against each other
Dome mountain
Molten material rises and lifts the earth’s crust into a broad bulge at the surface
Block Mountain
The earth’s crust cracks and splits into separate sections sections of rock move up above or drop down below other sections
Volcanic mountain
Lava , dust and ashes build up around where an eruption has occurred
How can you tell if a glacier is dense(thick)
By looking at its color-if it is blue then it is dense
