Science test 2/3 states of matter Flashcards
How does insulating hot water save energy
Insulating hot water will prevent heat from leaking out quickly, allowing easier heat up when needed.
What is radiation
the transfer of thermal energy from one object to another by electromagnetic waves.
random motion
particle movement in all different directions and speeds
diffusion
the movement of particles from one area of high concentration to low concentration
Conduction
is the transfer of particles by particle collisions or direct contact
convection
is the transfer of heat by movement of particles from one part of a material to another. Flow like motion
radiation
is the transfer of heat by electromagnetic waves
ex: convection
touching the stove and getting burned, or ice cooling your hand
ex: convection
steaming cup of tea, or cool air sinking
ex: radiation
sun giving off warmth, or heat from a lightbulb or fire.
States of matter
solid, liquid or gas
temperature when matter changes states
The temperature stays the same until full transformation
solid to liquid
melting
liquid to solid
freezing
liquid to gas
vaporization
gas to liquid
condensation
gas particles
move at high speeds with high kinetic energy. Can expand and contract
solid particles
move in place/ vibrating with low kinetic energy. No space to expand or contract
condenstation
gas to liquid
vaporization
liquid to gas in between boiling and evaporation
measure of average kinetic energy
temperature is the measure of particle motion along with average kinetic energy
kinetic energy
energy in motion
potential energy
stored energy
examples of kinetic energy
bouncing a ball, running, skipping rope.
