Science test #2 Flashcards
Plate
Large pieces of Earth’s crust that sit on the Earth’s mantle. They are constantly moving at a very slow pace.
What are the layers of the Earth?
Crust, Mantle, Outer core, and Inner core.
Outer Layers
The crust and mantle make up the outer layer on the Earth. The thin solid crust sits on top of the soft-solid mantle.
Fossils
Remains or imprints of long dead organisms preserved in rock over time.
Theory of Continental Drift
The idea that the continets move slowly over time, and that at one point they were together in a supercontinet called pangea.
plate motion
Plates move gradually, at a rate of about 2-10 cm a year.
How does a Divergent boundary move?
Away from each other.
How does the Divergent boundary interact with the mantle?
The mantle raises up in the space between the plates.
Landforms created by a Divergent boundary.
Volcanoes, and a Mid-Ocean Ridge.
How does a Covergent boundary move?
Toward each other.
How does a Convergent boundary interact with the mantle?
One plate is pushed down into the mantle and melted.
Landforms created by a Convergent boundary.
Volcanoes. Mountains, and Trenches.
