science test Flashcards
what does a sensory neuron do
picks up stimuli from the internal/external environment and coverts each stimulus into a nerve impulse.
what does the somatic nervous system do
controls voluntary actions
what does a brain stem do
controls involuntary actions
what does a dendrite do
carrys impluses towards the neuron’s cell body
what does the central nervous system consist of
brain and spinal cord
what does the spinal cord do
links the brain to most of te nerves in the pns (the spinal cord is a thick column of nerve tissue)
what is the cell body
the central part of a neuron that contains the nuclues and other organelles
what is a tissue
a group of cimilar cells that work together to perform a speicifc function
what is a cell
smallest living basic unit in all organisms
what is a response
a reaction to a stimulus
what is a reflex
an automatic response (that occurs very rapidlyand without consious control. reflexes help protect the body)
what does an axon do
carries impluses away from the cell body
what is a concussion
a brain bruise (occurs when soft tissue of the brain collides against the skull
what is an organ
a group of tissues that function together for a certain purpose
what is a stimulus
a change or signal in the environmet that can make an organism react is called a stimulus
what does the cerebrum do
interprets input from sense, controls movement, and carries our complex metal processes (Divided into a right and left half. the right half sends impluses to skeletal muscles on the left side, and left goes to right)
what is the peripheral nervous system
includes all nerves besides the brain and the spinal cord
what does the brain do
the brain is a part of the cns and controls most functions in the body
what does the cerebellum do
coordinates the actions of your muscles and helps you keep balance
what does a motor neuron do
sends impulses to a muscle or gland and that muscle or gland reacts in response
what is a neuron
the cell that carries info through your nervous system are called neurons
what is homeostasis
the body’s ability to maintain a stable internal environment, even when external enviornment changes.
what is an organ system
a group of organs that work together to perform a specific function in the body
what is the automatic nervous system
controls ALL involuntary actions.
