Science test Flashcards
Thermal energy
The amount of kinetic energy present in an object
Heat
The transfer of thermal energy
temperature
The measure of the amount of kinetic energy present in an object
Describe how objects of different temperatures reach equilibrium.
Thermal energy is always transferred from the warmer object to the cooler object until two objects reach the same temperature/equilibrium
List 3 types of conducters
copper
gold
nickel
mostly metals
list 3 types of insulaters
plastic
glass
wood
mostly nonmetals
describe how a conductor is able to transfer energy and why insulator is not
A conductor has atoms that are extremely dense. Since the atoms are located so close to one another, energy can easily be relayed from one another. An insulator on the other hand has atoms that are spread out and not able to relay energy from one atom to another
Conduction
Thermal energy is transferred by solid to solid
convection
thermal energy is transferred by a medium which may be liquid or gas
radiation
thermal energy being transferred through nothing (empty space) or through any substance
Example conduction
Touching a stove
Example convection
Furnace in your home
boiling water on a stove
Example radiation
energy from the sun
energy from a heat lamp
endothermic
energy is absorbed or taken from the environment around thus making the environment colder
endothermic transition
solid–>liquid–>gas
