Science Task 4 (chapters 4,5 and 8) Flashcards
What is a mixture?
A mixture is a combination of two or more substances
What is a solution?
a solution is a type of mixture in which another substance dissolves in another, creating a see-through liquid.
What is a soluble substance?
A soluble substance is a substance that can be dissolved
What is insoluble?
Insoluble is a substance that can’t be dissolved.
What is a solute?
A solute is the substance that gets dissolved.
what is a solvent?
The substance that does the dissolving.
What is a dilute?
A dilute is a solution with only a little solute and a lot of solvent
What does concentrated mean?
A solution with a lot of solute.
What does saturated mean?
Saturated is when the solvent cannot dissolve anymore solute
What is a suspension?
A suspension is when a substance cannot dissolve in the solvent, it will usually settle to the bottom
What is magnetic separation used for?
Magnetic separation is used to sperate magnetic substances from non magnetic ones.
What does decanting do?
Decanting lets the layers separate, than carefully removes the top layer from bottom layer from a mixture
What is sieving?
Sieving is when you use a sieve which is a barrier with holes in it, small substances can move through the holes larger ones cannot.
What is filtration?
Filtration is very similar to sieving, however it uses filter paper with microscopic holes.
What is centrifuging?
A centrifuge is a machine that spins around really fast that forces larger particles to the side then bottom of container
