Science STudy Guuide Flashcards
Density
The mass per unit volume of a substance
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Atoms
Small particles; Building blocks of life.
separating mixtures
When substances form a mixture (not held together by a chemical bond), the properties of the individual substances do not change. One way that a mixture and a compound differ is that the parts of a mixture often can be separated by physical properties.
solubility
The ability of one substance to dissolve in another.
conductivity
The ability of matter to conduct, or carry along, an electrical current.
boiling point
The temperature of which a substance changes from liquid to gas.
What makes up atoms?
Neurons(Neutral, they live in the nucleus), Protons(+, they also live in the nucleus), and Electrons(-, they orbit around the nucleus).
melting point
The temperature of which a substance changes from solid to liquid.
size independent properties
Properties that don’t rely on how much matter there is of a substance.
size dependant properties
Some physical properties are dependent upon the size or amount of matter. Measurements of these properties vary depending on how much matter is in a sample.
Know this
Mass: The amount of matter in an object. (Not weight!)
Volume: The amount of space in which something takes up
states of matter
Solids, Liquids, and Gasses. Physical property of matter. Dependent on how fast the atoms are moving
Solid: Aluminum
Liquid: Water
Gas: Oxygen
physical properties
An identity of matter that you can change without changing the identity of matter
Substances
Matter with a composition that is always the same.
