Science study Guide Flashcards
Physical Weathering
Breaks rocks apart but does not change them
Chemical weathering
Iron can rust and becomes different. Is caused by water, air pollution and living things
Erosion
The moving weathered rock and soil
Deposition
The dropping of materials moved erosion
Rock cycle
The ways that rocks change from one form to another
Igneous rock
Rock formed from melted rock that comes from deep within the earth
Sedimentary rock
Rock formed when sediments are pressed or cemented together
Metamorphic
Rock formed when igneous or sedimentary rock is changed by heat or pressure
Plate tectonics
A theory that the earths surface is broken into plates that move.
What is the ring of fire and where is it located?
An area where a large number of earthquakes and volcanos occur. Located in the pacific ocean.
How does an earthquake occur?
When the earth’s plates suddenly move an earthquake occurs.
What happens during a volcano?
When one plate is forced under another one rises and forms a volcano and as the crust on plate moves under the other friction and the earths heat melts the rock which rises to the surface of a volcanic eruption
Explain what physical weathering is?
When rocks break apart but it does change what they are made of and it may change their size and shape. Example would be wind and water.
Explain what chemical weathering is
A changes a substance that makes up rocks and a harder material may become a softer material. Iron can iron oxide or rust.
What causes erosion and how can it be stopped?
Flowing water and wind cause erosion. Plants, sandbags and wind breaks.
