Science study for quiz tmrw :/ Flashcards
How does thermal energy apply to toast?
The toast has such a low density it would heat up fast, and cool down fast
How do convection currents apply to a toaster?
Warm air rises out of the toaster because it has a lower density, then cools, then becomes less dense and sinks
How does conduction apply to toast?
The metal bars that hold and make contact with the toast conduct electricity, toasting the bread.
How does radiation apply to toast?
when the heat coils turn bright orange, they radiate heat to the metal bars, toasting the bread
How does chemical energy apply to toast?
slightly burning the toast rearranges the bonds of the bread, creating carbon
how does temperature apply to toast?
The average kinetic energy is higher where the bars are touching the bread, and lower where it’s not
How does heat apply to toast?
The toaster was the warmer system, that transferred heat to the cooler system ( the bread )
Where is the conductor on the toast?
the metal bars
Where is the insulator on the toaster?
The plastic switches
Are lithium-ion batteries a form of chemical energy?
Yes, because if it has atoms it is going to be chemical energy.
What are lithium-ion batteries?
lithium-ion batteries charge faster, last longer, and have a higher power density.
What is thermal energy?
The measurement of average kinetic energy in a system.
How is radiation different than conduction?
Radiation does not need contact with something, like conduction
What is heat?
The flow of thermal energy from a warmer to cooler object
How is heat different than temperature?
Heat transfers causes temperature to change
What is temperature?
The measurement of average kinetic energy in a system.
What is conduction?
Transfer of thermal energy that occurs in solids, liquids, and gases when two substances of different temperatures make contact
What is radiation?
The transfer of energy by the movement of electromagnetic waves or subatomic particles.
What is convection?
Heat transfer caused by the cycle of warm air rising, and then the falling of cooler denser air
What happens as material heats, expands, and becomes less dense?
it rises
How does convection currents apply to an oven?
convection currents help reduce hot and cool spots.
What happens as material cools, contracts, and becomes more dense?
it sinks
What is the energy of motion?
kinetic energy
What are convection currents?
Heat transfer caused by the rising of hotter, less dense fluids and the falling of cooler, more dense fluids.
What is a conductor?
A substance or object that transfers heat or electrical energy, of which the atoms are free to leave.
What is an insulator?
A material that does not heat or conduct electricity, where the atoms are held tightly on the outer most orbit.
What is chemical energy?
A form of potential energy stored in chemical bonds and released through chemical.
What is mechanical energy?
the sum of the potential and kinetic energy of an object.
What is a system?
A group of atoms
Doritoooosssss
When the airplane was high in the air the pressure went down, and the volume of the bag went up
