science study Flashcards
what is force?
force is something that pushes and pulls an object in a pacific way.
what is an unbalanced force?
an unbalanced force is the force applied in one direction is greater than the force applied in the opposite direction.
what is a balanced force?
a balanced force is something that is opposite in direction and equal in size.
what is air resistance?
air resistance is the force opposing force gravity.
what is friction?
a contact force: occurs when two surfaces come into contact with eachother.
what is gravity?
gravity is something that pulls an object to a surface .
what is magnetism?
the force exerted by magnets when they attract or repel each other
what is mass?
how much matter (solid, liquid, and gas) is inside you.
what is weight?
measure of the pull of gravity on your mass.
what is newtons?
the SI unit of force. It is equal to the force that would give a mass of one kilogram an acceleration of one meter per second per second and is equivalent to 100,000 dynes.
what is newtons 1st law?
newtons 1st law is that a object in motion will remain in motion and an object at rest will remain at rest unless acted Apon by a unbalanced force.
what is terminal velocity?
the limiting uniform velocity attained by falling body when the resistance of the air has become equal to the force of gravity.
what is static friction?
friction that stops an object from moving.
kinetic friction
the force that opposes an object from moving’
useful friction
traction needed to walk without slipping,
unwanted friction
Friction always opposes motion and is often an unwanted force.
buoyancy
the ability or tendency of something to float in water or other fluid.
sinking
If the weight force down is larger than the upward push of the water on the object then the object will sink.
floating
when the weight force on the object is balanced by the upward push of the water on the object
neutral buoyancy
a condition in which a physical body’s average density is equal to the density of the fluid in which it is immersed.
density and its formula
how much space an object or substance takes up (its volume) in relation to the amount of matter in that object or substance (its mass).
fulcrum
a thing that plays a central or essential role in an activity, event, or situation.
load
a heavy or bulky thing that is being carried or is about to be carried
effort
a vigorous or determined attempt.
