Science - Separation Techniques and Mixtures Flashcards
Evaporation
the process that changes liquid water to gaseous water (water vapor)
Filtering
to remove solids from liquids or gases, or to remove particular types of light, using special equipment
Crystallisation
the solidification of a liquid substance into a highly structured solid
Distillation
process involving the conversion of a liquid into vapour that is subsequently condensed back to liquid form
Decanting
the process of separation of liquid from solid and other immiscible (non-mixing) liquids, by removing the liquid layer at the top from the layer of solid or liquid below
Magnetic attraction
the process of separating components of mixtures by using a magnet to attract magnetic substances
Sedimentation
heavier components of the mixture settle on the bottom, due to gravity
Chromatography
a process for separating components of a mixture. To get the process started, the mixture is dissolved in a substance called the mobile phase, which carries it through a second substance called the stationary phase
Solution
a mixture in which all the particles are evenly mixed
Suspensions
a heterogeneous mixture in which the solid particles are spread throughout the liquid without dissolving in it
Colloid
mixtures with particle sizes that consist of clumps of molecules
Precipitation
The emergence of the insoluble solid from
a dissolved solution
