Science- rocks and the earth Flashcards
What is weathering?
The breaking of rocks into smaller pieces and their movement away from their original rock
what is chemical weathering?
Chemical weathering is when acid breaks up rock
what is Biological weathering?
Biological weathering that happens when plants and animals break up rock
what is erosion?
Erosion is the process where rocks are broken down by natural forces such as wind or water
What is Freeze-thaw?
occurs when water continually seeps into cracks, freezes and expands, eventually breaking the rock apart.
what is a Pororus material?
A porous material has small gaps that may contain substances in their liquid or gas states. Water can soak into a pororus material
What is deposition
The settling of sediments that have moved away from their original rock
What is the Heliocentric model?
The model where the sun is in the centre of the solar system
What is the geocentric model?
The model where the Earth is at the centre of the solar system
What is a dwarf planet?
A small lump of rock in orbit around the Sun
What is a constellation
A collection of stars that make a pattern in the Sky
What is ceramics?
Ceramic materials are compounds. They include metal silicates, metal oxides, metal carbides, and metal nitrides.
What is a light year?
The distance light travels in a year
Compaction (sedimentary rock)
weight of sediments above squeeze them into rocks
Cementation (sedimentary rock)
another substance sticks the sediment together
