Science revision (reproduction) Flashcards
Fertilisation
the action or process of fertilizing an egg or a female animal or plant, involving the fusion of male and female gametes to form a zygote.
zygote
Zygote, fertilized egg cell that results from the union of a female gamete (egg, or ovum) with a male gamete (sperm)
embryo
An embryo is the early stage of development of a multicellular organism. In general, in organisms that reproduce sexually, embryonic development is the part of the life cycle that begins just after fertilization and continues through the formation of body structures, such as tissues and organs.
fetus
an unborn or unhatched offspring of a mammal, in particular an unborn human more than eight weeks after conception.
placenta
The placenta is an organ that develops in your uterus during pregnancy. This structure provides oxygen and nutrients to your growing baby and removes waste products from your baby’s blood. The placenta attaches to the wall of your uterus, and your baby’s umbilical cord arises from it.
amniotic sac
the fluid-filled sac that contains and protects a fetus in the womb.
umbilical cord
The umbilical cord is a narrow tube-like structure that connects the developing baby to the placenta. The cord is sometimes called the baby’s “supply line” because it carries the baby’s blood back and forth, between the baby and the placenta.
